If you live in a mobile home, you know that utility bills
can be high, unless you know how to winterize it. Here are three steps to
decrease the winter heating bill in
your mobile home.
Don’t let cold air in through the windows. Any hardware
store sells plastic wrap designed especially for windows during the winter
months. Lay the plastic over the frame of the window and use a hair blower to
seal the edges.
It is also a good idea to use a silicone window sealer
around the frame and the glass on the outside of each of the windows in case it
isn’t completely sealed. Before using on visible areas, practice spraying in
inconspicuous areas first.
Seal up any holes in the outside and inside of the house.
Again, all hardware stores carry spray foam insulator. Key places to look for
are around water valves, under the home, and in cracks between doors, windows
and joints.
The spray foam insulator works great, but it is not as good
as installing real insulation when needed for walls that have access to the
outside. Insulation in interior walls can help to muffle sound and to keep the
warmth in the room next to an un-insulated room – like the water heater or
laundry rooms.
Buy an insulating blanket for your water heater if it is
outdoors. Many water heaters on mobile homes are accessed through a seldom-used
door on the outside of the mobile that is separated from the rest of the home.
Because of this they are particular susceptible to the cold winter winds. A lot
of heat can be lost from them.
By adding an insulating blanket around your water heater,
you will help to keep the heat from transferring away from your water heater
into the air which will help lower your expenses related to heating water for
your home.
All of these activities that most mobile home owners can do by
themselves. These three steps for decrease
the winter heating bill in your mobile home can save you hundreds, if not
thousands of dollars a year.
